The Kuban Cossack Chorus is the the brightest representative of the folk Cossack culture. It can be likened to a sweeping cavalry onslaught! The Chorus simply bursts out in the spectacular, capturing show in which the powerful energy of masterful, dynamic dances, recklessness of daring Cossack songs and touching sentimentality are combined. This is a veritable theatrical performance. There are at times up to 120 performers on the stage, for the Chorus consists of the vocal group, dance group and the orchestra of folk and wind instruments. The motley picture of flamboyant Cossack costumes and properties, such as sabers, daggers, lances, maces, etc. is breath-taking. And no wonder. In one show the audience can see as many as about 840 different costumes. The history of the Kuban Cossack Chorus dates back to October 1811 when the Black Sea Cossack Army founded its Military Choir. The new-born choir differed from other similar choirs mainly in repertoire which was a combination of both religious chants and folk songs as well as pieces written by composers. The Chorus is approaching its bicentennial possessing the richest repertoire comprising over 200 songs of different genres: marching, humorous, pensive, ballads, masterpieces of the Russian religious music.
For over 30 years now artistic directorship of the group has belonged to Victor Zakharchenko. The artist who reached the top of the trade; rigorous and demanding leader of the Kuban Cossack Chorus. A Cossack by birth. A scientist. A university professor. A member of the Presidential Council for Culture of Russia. A Russian composer whose songs people listen to standing, with the tears in their eyes...
The most grateful audience of the Chorus have always been the Kuban spectators. The company gives annually not less than 100 performances in the cities and villages of its native province of Kuban.
The Kuban Cossack Chorus constantly participates in the biggest international art festivals for professional folk groups. For the last three years the company has regularly given recitals on the bst venues of the country (The State Kremlin Palace and the State Central Concert Hall "Russia" in Moscow) and has been a constant participant of the programs conducted by the Russian Ministry of culture, such as Days of the Russian Culture in Peking (2001), in Cannes (2003), in Sofia (Bulgaria, 2004); "Green Week" in Berlin (2002-2005), the visit of the President of Russia to Germany (2003), etc.
